Historical Significance: The Panglong Agreement

The day commemorates the anniversary of the Panglong Agreement (or Panglong Treaty), which was signed on February 12, 1947, in Panglong, Shan State.

• Key Figures: The agreement was spearheaded by General Aung San (the national hero and father of Aung San Suu Kyi) and signed by him, members of the interim Burmese government, and leaders from the Shan, Kachin, and Chin ethnic regions (known as the “Frontier Areas” under British rule).

• Purpose: The main goal of the agreement was to unify the diverse ethnic groups of Burma (as Myanmar was then known) and the “Ministerial Burma” (the central, low-land area) to jointly strive for independence from the British colonial administration.

• Key Principles: The agreement offered the ethnic areas “full autonomy in internal administration” and the principle of equality, paving the way for the formation of the Union of Burma (which later became the Union of Myanmar).
