 When is Thingyan?

  • Date: It typically runs for four to five days, usually falling around mid-April (April 13th to 16th, with New Year’s Day following).3

  • Significance: It marks the end of the Burmese lunar month of Tagu and the transition of the sun from the sign of Pisces to Aries, ushering in the New Year.4 It is also the hottest time of the year, making the water-throwing welcome!5

💧 The Meaning of the Water

The water is not just for fun—it carries deep symbolic significance:

  • Cleansing: The central act of pouring or throwing water symbolizes the washing away of the past year’s sins, bad deeds, and misfortune.6 By the end of the festival, everyone is metaphorically cleansed and ready for a fresh start.

  • Blessings: The water represents blessings and good wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity in the coming year.

🎉 How the Festival is Celebrated

Thingyan is a vibrant mix of religious devotion and joyous, unrestrained celebration.

1. The Water Festival (A-Kya Nei & A-Kyet Nei)

  • The Descent of Thagyamin: The second day (A-Kya Nei) is when the celestial king, Thagyamin (the Burmese name for the Hindu deity Åšakra/Indra), is believed to descend from heaven to check on human affairs.11 A cannon is traditionally fired to signal his arrival and the start of the water-throwing.

  • The Splashing: Streets turn into giant water fights.12 People use everything from water pistols and hoses to buckets and massive bamboo water syringes to douse passersby.13 Pandal (temporary, festive stages) are set up in major cities where large groups perform traditional and modern songs and dances while spraying water.

  • Who is Exempt? Generally, only monks, the elderly, pregnant women, and small children are spared from getting soaked.

2. Religious and Traditional Observances

The days surrounding the water-throwing are dedicated to merit-making and showing respect:

DayNameFocus & Activities
Thingyan EveA-Kyo NeiSpiritual Start. People observe the Eight Precepts (a stricter Buddhist code), visit pagodas, make offerings to monks, and ritually wash Buddha statues with scented water.
New Year’s DayHnit Hsan Ta Yet NeiRenewal and Respect. Water throwing stops. Young people perform the custom of showing respect to elders by washing their hair and cutting their nails. People make New Year’s resolutions.
CustomsThroughoutReleasing Fish: Buying fish from vendors and releasing them into rivers or lakes is a common act of merit-making. Free Food: Communities set up Satuditha (charity food stations) to offer free food and traditional snacks, like Mont Lone Yay Paw (glutinous rice balls with jaggery inside), to everyone celebrating.

In essence, Thingyan is Myanmar’s most boisterous and beloved festival—a multi-day national holiday that successfully blends Buddhist merit-making with a joyful, collective cleansing ritual to start the new year fresh.
