 Historical Significance: The Anti-Fascist Resistance

The date commemorates the start of the Burma National Army’s (BNA) revolt against the Japanese occupation forces in 1945, during World War II.

• Initial Alliance: The BNA, led by General Aung San (father of Aung San Suu Kyi), was initially formed with Japanese support to fight against the British colonial rule.

• The Turn: General Aung San and other nationalist leaders realized the Japanese had no intention of granting genuine independence. On March 27, 1945, the BNA famously switched allegiance, joining the Allied forces in an armed resistance campaign to drive the Japanese out of Burma. This resistance paved the way for the country’s independence in 1948.

• Original Name: The holiday was originally known as Resistance Day or Anti-Fascist Resistance Day, recognizing the broad national movement against Japanese fascism.

• Renaming: The name was later changed to Armed Forces Day (Tatmadaw Nay) by the military (the Tatmadaw) in 1955.

• Key Speeches: The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services typically delivers a major address to the nation, emphasizing the military’s role as the protector of the nation, the constitution, and national sovereignty.

• Source of Pride (Official View): For the military and its supporters, the day is a celebration of the Tatmadaw’s founding role in the independence struggle, positioning them as the ultimate guardian of the nation.

• Controversial Holiday: Due to the military’s decades-long involvement in politics, authoritarian rule, and internal conflicts, the holiday is viewed very differently by various groups within the country, including those involved in the pro-democracy movement and ethnic armed organizations.
